Evaluation methodologies privilege RCTs for establishing whether treatments work. This makes it difficult to warrant more complex treatments, like psychological therapies, which are hard to test with RCTs. It also misses many outcomes that matter to service users beyond the easily targeted symptoms and it downgrades the role of clinical judgment. Working with EU data, and based on preliminary philosophical and methodological research already underway [Cartwright (forthcoming)], K4U will develop a credible framework alternative to RCTs for evidencing therapies.
