Our Mission: Driving Reform in Criminal Law & Justice

The CCLCJ is a vibrant hub for cutting-edge theoretical, empirical, comparative and doctrinal research that shapes and reforms criminal law and criminal justice systems. We prioritise work with societal impact—exploring issues like gendered violence, international cooperation, online harms, and vulnerable populations.

Through our two core themes—Criminal Law in a Global Context and Vulnerable People in the Criminal Justice—we seek to address pressing legal challenges and inform policy, legislation, and practice. We host international conferences, public lectures, and practitioner-focused workshops that mix academic insight with frontline expertise. Postgraduate researchers and early-career academics benefit from a supportive environment for presenting work, peer feedback, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Our Two Core Themes

  • Theme 1: Criminal Law in a Global Context

Led by experts in international and transnational criminal law, we investigate how criminal law operates across borders and under international legal frameworks. We examine concepts like jurisdiction, war crimes, terrorism, cybercrime, and money laundering, often through a human rights lens.

  • Theme 2: Vulnerable People in the Criminal Justice System

Led by feminist and socio-legal scholars, our research addresses vulnerability in the justice system—focusing on domestic and sexual violence, crisis pregnancies, mental health, learning disabilities, and ageing—to develop more inclusive and justice-centred legal frameworks.
