Durham University

Department of Physics

Team Project

Overview

This module allows students to experience the application of physical principles to the solution of a scientific question placed in an industrial/research context. For example, projects have been run in conjunction with PII Pipeline Solutions, Procter & Gamble, Durham County Cricket Club and Cottam Brush. Durham students have learnt more than they ever wanted to about freezing ice cream, what goes on inside a dishwasher, how gas pipes are inspected and 1001 other applications of physics in industry.

Until recently, Team Projects were a unique feature of the Durham Physics course. The Institute of Physics asked Durham to lead a project to help other physics departments in the UK to start similar courses. Now, 15 other departments in the UK are starting courses based on the Durham Team projects! The work resulted in the award of the Bragg Medal and Prize of the Institute of Physics to Prof. Paula Chadwick.

Students can find out more information regarding the course here. Additionally, potential clients can find out more information about the project structure as well as previous projects and case studies that students have completed.
