Responsibilities within department
As Technical Services and Facilities Manager, I work in co-operation with the Director of Facilities to deliver the strategic management of a large technical support team and the management and development of all facilities housed within the department.

I joined Durham University within the Department of Physics in 1984 as a trainee technician
based in the teaching laboratories, on a 1 year government Youth Training Scheme. After completing
three further years training as a university trainee technician I attained technician status in 1988
with City and Guilds qualifications in mechanical engineering and welding.
I served in all areas of the teaching laboratories along with a selection of research groups as a
technician from 1988 to 2014 achieving promotion to Teaching Laboratories Supervisor in 2003. In
2011, complementing the role of Teaching Laboratories Supervisor, I was appointed the additional
role of Deputy Departmental Superintendent to provide cover for the Superintendent during annual
leave and absences etc.
In June 2014, on the retirement of the previous Superintendent, I covered the role of Departmental
Superintendent in an acting capacity until December 2014. Then In January 2015 I was offered and
readily accepted the post of Technical Services and Facilities Manager of the Physics Department.
