Departmental cricket match: the players

Staff in the Department of Physics are celebrating after beating Postgraduate Students by twelve runs in the departmental cricket match.

The friendly but closely-fought game, which took place at the Durham City ground near the banks of the river Wear, saw some spirited performances from the teams, whose members included both experienced and up-and-coming players.

Staff won the toss and opted to bat first, achieving a total of 105 for 10. After a short break for a passing rain shower, Postgrads chased this target with great panache, and the tension in the atmosphere was palpable as the balls were delivered, but in the end they managed only 93 for 8.

The weather was a little chilly but a barbecue and bar provided excellent warmth. The match closed under a picturesque sunset and with the sound of the Cathedral bells ringing out their applause in the distance.

Thanks go to Mr Wrathmall for organising the whole thing, and to Durham City Cricket Club for their kindness and cooperation.
