The Department's Conference Room (Ph221) has been renamed the Bransden Room in honour of Emeritus Professor Brian Bransden. Brian came to Durham in 1963 as the Department's first Professor of Theoretical Physics and served terms as Dean of Science and as Chairman of the Board of Studies in Physics before retiring in 1991.

At a short ceremony and celebration lunch on Tuesday 20 June, the Head of Department, Professor Richard Abram, the Dean of Science, Dr Keith Orford, and Professors Emeritus, Sir Arnold Wolfendale and Alan Martin paid tribute to Brian's role in building up both the theoretical physics and atomic and molecular physics activities in the Department to their current impressive strength, and reminisced about notable moments in his distinguished career.

Brian is pictured (third from the left) at the lunch in the newly named Bransden Room with longstanding colleagues Dick Fong, Alan Martin, Sir Arnold Wolfendale, Derek Corner, John Major, Fred Ashton and Desmond Evans.
