New Grants May 2020: Joint ICC project, led by Richard Bower, awarded £317k from EPSRC

(12 June 2020)

Richard Bower of the Institute for Computational Cosmology at Durham University has been awarded £317k from the EPSRC, in a joint project with Computer science, on 'Massively parallel SPH for engineering and Astrophysics at the exa-scale'.

Richard said “At the ICC, our aim is to study the evolution of the Universe and to understand how stars and galaxies form. The problem is challenging because we need to simultaneously capture both detail and large volumes in order to understand how these interact. Using novel methods from computer science this grant will allow us to develop a code which will enable massively parallel simulations, potentially spreading a single calculation across millions of computing cores simultaneously. The new approach promises to harness computing power on a scale that has never been seen before.”
