The Oriental Museum is hosting an evening of live music and family-friendly events to celebrate the spectacular festival of Diwali on Tuesday 14 November from 6pm - 8pm. Staff and students from the Durham University Hindu Society are looking forward to welcoming visitors of all ages, to join in with traditional Diwali activities.
Diwali is the Indian festival of lights and is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and some Buddhists. It marks the victory of good over evil and hope over despair. This is a great opportunity to explore the Museum and it's collections.
Visitors will be able to take part in traditional prayers to the goddess Lakshmi, try delicious vegetarian snacks and arts and craft activities. There will also be a Rajasthani-style puppet performance inspired by Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, art and music to enjoy. Plus, live Indian raga music.
To ensure smooth service visitors will be asked to choose a food slot upon booking.
Charlotte Spink, Learning Coordinator at the Oriental Museum said: “This year we have collaborated the Durham University Hindu Society to host these wonderful celebrations. I want to thank them and all our community and student volunteers that help us every year to make this such as welcoming and inclusive event for everyone.”
