Our Computer Science is one of the top-ranked departments in the UK and it is rapidly growing.

Over recent years, we have formed multiple new research groups that build on our current strengths in computer vision, applied artificial intelligence in human systems, and scientific computing, which reflects our emerging expertise in Digital Humanities and Networks, and Distributed Computing.

Algorithms and Complexity in Durham (ACiD)

ACiD is a world-leading research group with research programmes involving many international collaborators.

Theoretical Computer Science comprises the development of algorithmic techniques that efficiently exploit the power of modern computers, the study of the limits of computation and the ways in which we can cope with, and take advantage of, intractability, and the science of the unsolvable.

The group is broad-based with research foci including computational complexity, proof complexity, descriptive complexity, graph theory, exact algorithms, randomised algorithms, approximation algorithms, parameterized algorithms, finite model theory, constraint satisfaction, interconnection networks, universal algebra and mathematical logic.

Artificial Intelligence and Human Systems (AIHS)

AIHS has five major research strands that share the core goal of applying AI for social good. All strands are working on real-world problems with a tangible impact on people’s lives while focusing on different research areas and methodologies: Digital Humanities, Digital Health, Human-Computer Interaction, Software Engineering and Technology-Enhanced Learning.

In addition, AIHS is involved in the N8 Research Partnership and N8 CIR groups and many AIHS members are part of the Bias in AI network.

The group develops inter-disciplinary collaborations within Durham and the UK as well as internationally, boasts connections to the industry and welcomes companies looking for research solutions to their problems.
