Art of the moving image

Year 1

You will explore the moving image from its origins to streaming platforms, in a range of national and transnational contexts from the Arab world to the Americas, Asia and Europe, focusing primarily on a range of fascinating films from around the globe. In the process, you will become familiar with the key concepts necessary to critically engage with the moving image.

Year 2

Following on from this, you will be introduced to the contexts in which the moving image has intersected with political, social and cultural developments in a range of national and transnational contexts. You will be able to focus on a range of works from the Arab world to the Americas, Asia and Europe.

Year 3

In the final year, you will have the opportunity to become familiar with the major technical and aesthetic questions involved in planning, shooting and editing a short film. You will be taught how to link these to issues currently animating research in film studies, and develop your filmmaking skills as a research-informed practice.
