Art of the moving image
You will explore the moving image from its origins to streaming platforms, in a range of national and transnational contexts from the Arab world to the Americas, Asia and Europe, focusing primarily on a range of fascinating films from around the globe. In the process, you will become familiar with the key concepts necessary to critically engage with the moving image.
Following on from this, you will be introduced to the contexts in which the moving image has intersected with political, social and cultural developments in a range of national and transnational contexts. You will be able to focus on a range of works from the Arab world to the Americas, Asia and Europe.
In the final year, you will have the opportunity to become familiar with the major technical and aesthetic questions involved in planning, shooting and editing a short film. You will be taught how to link these to issues currently animating research in film studies, and develop your filmmaking skills as a research-informed practice.
