World Cinema and Cosmopolitics
World Cinema and Cosmopolitics / WCC brings together a group of MLAC researchers interested in issues of cinematic representation, peripherality, film theory and criticism, and the politics and ethics of cinema beyond and across national boundaries and international circuits. Attentive to both film-historical and cultural analysis approaches to national and diasporic cinemas, WCC addresses regional, postcolonial, transnational and global cinematic productions as well as discipline- and archive-bound critical practices.
Our intellectual commitments dialogue at the intersection of the new national and transnational cinemas of the Middle East and the Arab world; post-Soviet and Central Asian cinemas; Latin American and Caribbean film contexts; and other ‘third’ and peripheral cinemas. Our research group builds on its convenors’ diverse fields of expertise in literature and literary history, visual culture, critical theory and cultural analysis. We share a strong determination to establish transnational film studies at Durham and regionally, at a time when the related fields of world and transnational cinema studies are consolidated nationally and expanding in exciting new directions.
Film studies have figured prominently in MLAC’s curriculum since the early 2000s, thanks to the research and impact activities of colleagues working on Mexican, Russian, Spanish, Italian and French national cinemas. In the last few years, our teaching, research and professional involvement in non-European, transnational, diasporic and ‘accented’ cinemas have added a new and different emphasis on film theory and criticism. Consequently, this research group initiative represents a dynamic new development in MLAC’s long-standing profile in film studies.
We are committed to contributing centrally to MLAC’s impact strategy. A key aspect of the research group’s plan for the immediate future is a more active focus on PG participation and training; exploring PG funding opportunities related to the group’s interests and expertise; and working on new grant proposals. The group, furthermore, will seek to contribute to the exciting new programmes developed through CVAC (Centre for Visual Arts and Culture), including its new MA in Visual Arts and Culture.
