Workshop on Crystals

This workshop, part of Marisa Galvez’s visit to Durham, will feature informal papers by Durham colleagues on themes relevant to the study of crystals, especially light, colour, and the powers of stones, scents, plants and other materials. Marisa Galvez will lead the discussion after each paper:

Corinne Saunders (English) – stones of virtue in medieval English romance

Mike Huxtable (English) – medieval colour theory and the relationship between light and colour, with reference to lapidary lore and examples of its use in poetry/fiction

Laura Campbell (French) – the material immaterial in Old French translations of Genesis

Charlotte Spencer (French) – medieval plants and gardens

Adam Talib (Arabic) – perfumes in premodern Islamicate writing
