School Lecture Series: From the Story to the TV Screen: a Creative Producer's Perspective

30th January 2020, 17:00 to 19:00, ER149, Elvet Riverside I, Leonardo Ferrara

The talk will look at the role of the creative producer within Raifiction (the drama department of Italy’s national broadcaster): how stories are selected and constructed for TV drama. It will begin by looking at how stories are chosen by the team at Raifiction: what are the criteria that apply, what are the targets of the production team, what is the dramatic pull of the story and its originality. Subsequently, the thematic content of the story, the appeal of the characters, the message that the story seeks to convey. The talk will then look at the editorial development of the story – from the subject, its elaboration for TV, towards the screenplay. It will discuss the producer’s relationship with the writers of the story and the elaboration of the ‘shooting script’. The talk will then look at the following phases from the perspective of the creative producer: the relationship with the director, the casting, the selection of locations, the filming and montage. Examples will be drawn from recent work of Raifiction.

The talk will be in English and Italian.
