Workshop: Visual culture in medical humanities

18th June 2015, 10:30, Van Mildert College, Durham University

This one-day workshop is co-sponsored by Durham University’s Centre for Medical Humanities and Centre for Visual Arts and Culture. It is designed to explore the intricate connections, and potential collaborations, between two dynamic fields.
It is widely accepted that much medical practice depends on visual evidence, that practitioners have produced many visual representations, that images and artifacts relating to health and illness attract wide interest whenever they are displayed. It is equally clear that many practitioners of the visual arts draw upon health and medicine in their work. Why then has visual culture not yet taken centre stage in the field of medical humanities?
We hope to explore this question and contribute to thinking about the future of medi-cal humanities by taking three themes as a focus: medicine and display, visual thinking, and visual therapeutics. Participants will hear short papers on these themes, and find out what is going on at Durham and elsewhere to bring the fields of visual culture and medical humanities into a productive relationship with one another.
