Translation & Linguistics Research Group: Angus Turvill 'From North East Japan to North East England'

Angus Turvill will discuss handling cultural issues in his translation of Hisashi Inoue's (2013) Shinshaku Tono Monogatari (Tales from a Mountain Cave). Hisashi Inoue (1934-2010) was a leading humourist, playwright and novelist. He was described by Nobel-prize-winner Kenzaburo Oe as 'one of the towering figure of contemporary Japan'.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase (£8) at the seminar. Royalties are donated to education support in Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture, where the book is set and which was devastated by the 2011 tsunami.

Angus is a Japanese-English translator who teaches on the Japanese strand of the MA Translation Studies.He has won prizes in the Shizuoka International, Kurodahan, and John Dryden Translation Competitions.
