First Annual Lecture in Environments and Visual Culture

29th October 2014, 18:00 to 20:00, Rosemary Cramp Lecture Theatre, Calman Learning Centre, Durham University

Imre Szeman, Canada Research Chair in Cultural Studies and Professor of English, Film Studies and Sociology at the University of Alberta, will give a lecture on 'Thinking with Oil'.

The absence of energy from accounts of contemporary power and the formation of subjects has arisen because energy has constituted a major blindspot in social and political theory. In this lecture, Szeman redresses this deficiency by insisting on the missing link between freedom and fuel, philosophy and petroleum.

The Centre for Visual Arts and Culture's first annual lecture in Environments and Visual Culture is jointly organized with the Durham Energy Institute.
