Year Abroad

The Year Abroad is a time for great cultural and personal learning, allowing students to perfect their knowledge of Italy’s language, investigate its culture and gain a wide range of transferable skills. We offer a wide range of intellectually rewarding and productive placements for our students. 

Durham is a partner of well-regarded Italian Universities including Bologna, Catania, Ferrara, Florence, Genoa, Modena, Rome (Pio V), Siena and Siena Stranieri. They offer our students a wide selection of learning opportunities, which complement those offered in Durham. Valuable advice is offered by local Erasmus officers of these universities, who operate in close coordination with the members of staff of the Department of Italian at Durham. 

The department also has links with a small number of prestigious organisations, including Serie A football clubs, international media groups and large agribusinesses, which offer dedicated work placements to our students. If you would like to discuss offering a placement for Durham students in your organisation, please contact Dr. Annalisa Cipollone. 

Alternatively, students may arrange their own work placements, volunteer, work as a British Council English Language Assistant or arrange to study privately in language schools, for which we normally receive bursaries. In conjunction with school staff, the department begins preparing students for a successful Year Abroad from the start of the second year, focusing on planning, making successful applications, practical matters and adapting to the culture. Support from departmental and school staff is available at every stage of the Year Abroad.
