Photography in East Asia

Academic Year 2019-20

About the Course

This module explores the intertwinning of photography, culture, and modernity and the redefinition and transformation of photography within the visual cultures of China and Japan from the 19th century to the present. Particular emphasis will be given to the photography of recent decades, in which the border of art and documentary has become a site for engaging with urgent questions of body and perception, place and displacement, the presence of the past, ecology and environmental degradation, and an ever-changing world of images.
