Catering

If you are an Undergraduate Fresher at John Snow College, your catering arrangements will vary depending on where you live.

  • If you live in John Snow College Halls, you will be part-catered. This means that you are self-catered most of the time, with the exception of Tuesday and Thursday evenings when you will enjoy College Dining in our Waterside Restaurant. This is included in your accommodation charge.
  • If you live in Durham University Colleges' Accommodation at Mezzino, you also enjoy the same part-catered package (if your room allocation in Mezzino is made via John Snow College) and this will be included in your accommodation charge.
  • If you live in the private sector accommodation, you are required to make your own arrangements for catering. However, you are welcome to join College Dining for a small charge.

There are plenty of places to pick up your groceries within the vacinity of John Snow College and Mezzino including Morrisons, Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's Local. Sainsbury's Local is located directly adjacent the main entrance to John Snow College.

Meal times

John Snow College dines together on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Waterside.

For 2016-2017 Dinner is served from 5.15pm with service continuing until 6.45pm.

During the academic year, a total of 48, two-course evening meals are provided specifically for John Snow College students If you live in John Snow College or Mezzino, the cost of these meals is included in your accommodation charge. For all other students, meals can be paid for at the point of purchase. At College Dining, those not living in College accommodation can purchase meals.


College Kitchens

Students living in John Snow College and Mezzino accommodation will share a spacious, comfortable communal kitchen with their fellow flatmates.

Every kitchen has a wide range of facilities that include:

  • Cooker
  • Sink and washing up area
  • Storage areas
  • Fridge
  • Freezer
  • Substantial cupboard space
  • Table and dining chairs
  • Microwave
  • Kettle
  • Ironing board

It is the responsibility of all flatmates to ensure that the communal kitchen area is kept tidy, clean and safe. Room and kitchen inspections are performed on a regular basis.

For those Freshers living in John Snow College or Mezzino accommodation, catered meals are held in the Waterside Restaurant on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Resident students will be provided with a dining card at the start of each term and this must be shown in order to receive their meal.

During the day, the Waterside is the main food outlet on Queen's Campus, offering a wide variety of hot and cold dishes including healthy eating options, pastas, carvery, vegetarian and halal choices.

In addition, the YUM deli bar adjoining the main Waterside provides a select-your-own salads and sandwiches service offering a range of delicious and varied fillings. If you are in a hurry you can simply choose from the YUM 'grab and go' selection of sandwiches or salads and hot or cold beverages.

We also have a coffee bar called Cafe Aroma which sells a full range of teas, coffees, snacks and light meals.


Formal Dinners

Each term, the College hosts wonderful Formal Dinners, where everyone dresses in formal wear plus their academic gown.

We enjoy a two course dinner with musical entertainment provided by our College societies. These dinners provide a great sense of occasion.

For those students living in John Snow College or Mezzino accommodation, the cost of Formal Dinners is included in the accommodation charge. Students who do not live in College accommodation, or are returning students, are also welcome to attend at a reasonable charge.
