John Snow College follows the University Environmental Plans, Policies and Procedures as laid out by Greenspace. We also have a Green Charter which is displayed in College Accommodation Reception, all accommodation blocks and on our website.
Emma Temperley – Accommodation & Facilities Services Co-ordinator is the Environmental Champion for the College and attends all environmental committees, groups and training events along with the Junior Common Room Environmental Representative.
Our College is committed to reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill. Staff and students are expected to sort waste carefully and we aim to recycle as much as possible. The following facilities and initiatives are in place in our College accommodation.
More than 1 million tonnes of textiles are thrown away every year, with most of this coming from household sources. At least 50% of the textiles we throw away are recyclable
Students can donate any unwanted clothing and shoes to charity all year round by placing them in the red bins in the Laundry Room
Items to donate
- Clean wearable clothes
- Paired shoes
Items not to donate
- Soiled or damp clothes
- Duvets & pillows
There is now a 5p carrier bag charge in place in the UK so we encourage our students make use of the carrier bag recycling point in the laundry. They can save money and help reduce the amount of plastic that goes to landfill by taking a bag whenever they need but we do ask that they remember to help us fill it back up again too.
We have also provided carrier bag holders in all forty two of our shared kitchens in the hope that this will encourage our students to re-use their carrier bags.
Ink cartridge and mobile phone recycling
Students can make use of the recycling point in reception for printer cartridges and unwanted mobile phones.
In the box provided the following items can be recycled:
- Laser Cartridges
- Inkjet Cartridges
- Mobile Phones
Waste and Recycling
We have improved the signage on all of recycling bins in order to make it clearer and more defined and we have tailored the recycling guides that we have in place in student kitchens to specifically reflect the systems at John Snow College. We provide recycling bags in all kitchens and bedrooms and we have two dedicated recycling cleaners who empty the recycling bags on a weekly basis.
As batteries can no longer be placed in with general waste, they must be disposed of correctly so a battery collection bin is provided in College reception.
