Former Durham IAS Fellow helps uncover the secret of the cold sore virus

Professor Bryan R Cullen, a Distinguished Fellow at the Durham IAS in 2006/07, has led a team of scientists at the Duke Medical Research Centre to discover a possible cure for cold sores.

Duke University Medical Centre scientists studied how the herpes simplex virus 1 is able to lie dormant in the trigeminal nerve of the face until triggered to reawaken by excessive sunlight, fever, or other stresses.
