IAS 2014-15 Theme Announced
(7 January 2013)
Following university-wide consultation, the Institute of Advanced Study has chosen 'Emergence' as the theme for academic year 2014-15. The IAS also wants to highlight its particular dimension of 'Emergency' as a strong potential sub-theme, which would relate to the theme of 'Crisis', for which there was also substantial support.
There was less support for 'Fragility' and 'Disruption', however these clearly have the potential to offer productive sub-themes too.
In addition, some colleagues were keen to work with the earlier proposed theme of 'Conflict, Competition and Cooperation'. The IAS encourages those colleagues to contact the Institute with proposals and ideas.
On 30th January the Institute will host a Scoping Meeting (Kenworthy Hall, St. Mary's College, 1.00pm). The IAS and its directors will prepare in advance and sketch out some (entirely provisional) potential sub-themes under which proposals might coalesce and to assist discussions and ensure that all voices are heard at the meeting. The Scoping Meeting agenda will also allot some time for groups simply to talk to each other and determine common ground. The Institute therefore requests colleagues who are interested in submitting activity proposals to provide the IAS with a short abstract (no more than 500 words) by January 25th at the latest (this can be very informal indeed, to give the Institute an idea about what is Emerging).
The IAS is looking forward to hearing about some exciting ideas for research activities.
Proposals and any questions or queries should be directed to Linda Crowe (44686).
