Welcome Event for Research Postgraduates at Durham

21st October 2010, 19:00 to 21:00, Institute of Advanced Study, Cosin's Hall, Palace Green

The Institute of Advanced Study and its Research Postgraduate Group warmly invite all research postgraduates to a welcome event, to be held on Thursday, 21st October from 7.00 to 9.00pm, at Cosin's Hall on Palace Green.

The IAS is a prestigious, ideas-based Institute, which brings together some of the world's finest researchers from every discipline to examine themes of major intellectual, scientific, political and practical significance; it stands for new thinking through inter-disciplinary dialogue across all disciplines. Each year's research follows a different theme and the theme for 2010-11 is Futures.

Working within the IAS, the Research Postgraduate Group meets regularly (about twice a term), to hear papers from  IAS fellows or from fellow research postgraduates, and to engage in discussions about topics of an interdisciplinary nature and/or the challenges and rewards of engaging in interdisciplinary research. The group is an excellent opportunity to engage with the leading edge research of the IAS, and to network constructively with other research postgraduates approaching similar ideas from different disciplinary angles. The group also receives invitations to Fellows' seminars within the IAS, as well as advance notice of IAS lectures and future activities.

In 2007-08 members of the group also established the interdisciplinary Kaleidoscope journal, which had its fourth issue published in August.

We are now looking for new members from the research postgraduate community (from all faculties) to join the discussion group for the year 2010-11.  If there is sufficient demand, it is possible that supplementary groups, possibly focusing on interdisciplinary work across cognate subjects, might be formed.  The IAS is extremely keen to involve a wide cross-section of the postgraduate community, and is open, always, to new ideas about how postgraduate involvement should be organised and focused.

The welcome event on 21st October will give you the flavour of the various activities organised by the IAS for the research postgraduate community.  The event will consist of:

- 7.00 Drinks reception

- 7.30 Brief introduction to the IAS and to the Group, and to the Kaleidoscope Journal

- 8.00 Opportunity to chat informally with members of the group and editors of the Kaleidoscope Journal

If you wish to attend this event please email Judith Aird by no later than Friday 15 October 2010.

If you would be interested in becoming a member of the group, you can register your interest on the day.  If you are  unable to make the event but would still be interested in joining, please email Audrey Bowron so that you can be added to the mailing list.
