Professor Kanchana Ruwanapura (Southampton): Summary of Temporality of Disasters: The Politics of Women’s Livelihoods ‘After’ the 2004 Tsunami in Sri Lanka

21st May 2009, 18:00, Room 231, Elvet Riverside

Disasters are experienced differentially according to ethnicity, gender and class. The 2004 Tsunami in Sri Lanka was no exception.

A study of women’s endeavours after this momentous event revealed not only this differentiation and how women responded to the ways in which they were being (re)configured, but also the substantial strengths and resilience that they demonstrated in taking their lives forward after serious setbacks.

This is the eighth seminar in Humanising Practice Seminar Series.
