Professor Darja Zaviršek: Humanising Disability - discourses on disability in Eastern Europe

29th January 2009, 18:15, Room 231, Elvet Riverside

This is the fourth seminar in the Humanising Practice Seminar Series.

Public discourses on disability in Eastern Europe have characterised disabled people within a medical model of disability and tended to treat them in patronising and infantilising ways.

Disabled people have challenged this portrayal and begun to assert their rights as citizens. This session will trace this development within a historical perspective to explore how disabled people have sought to move out of the ‘asylum’ and into ‘normal’ life.
