Professor Alan France: Constructing Respect - Citizenship, Responsibility and the Demonisation of Youth

4th December 2008, 18:15 to 19:15, Room 231, Elvet Riverside

This is the third seminar in the Humanising Practice Seminar Series.

‘Respect’ has become a trendy word under New Labour, but it is also a value that indicates appreciation of other people as human beings.

This seminar will consider a study that explores how policy and the media construct respect and shows how policy in particular is dis-respectful to young people in a wide range of areas. It then goes on to develop some examples of how things could be done differently in policy and practice and highlights the 'new' responsibilities of youth in the transition towards citizenship.
