IAS Fellows' Seminar - Transgression and Transcendence: cosmic narratives of play, pleasure and spirit

18th March 2019, 13:00 to 14:00, Seminar Room, Institute of Advanced Study, Dr Staci Newmahr ( State University of New York at Buffalo State)

This seminar will unpack conceptual binaries that underlie various leisure and identity practices in the region.Based on field work throughout the North, Dr Newmahr will share her most recent thinking about the prevalence of particular kinds of leisure and the meanings of leisure and pleasure, as situated within place, space and time. She hopes to illuminate how contemporary leisure practices reveal negotiations of mortality, morality and modernity, and, in turn, how these negotiations reflect cosmic narratives shaped by and through region. The seminar aims to explore transgression and transcendence, toward (ultimately) a phenomenological understanding of pleasure and emotional experience.

Places are limited and so any academic colleagues or students interested in attending a seminar should register online in advance to reserve a place. Places will be confirmed within 48 hours of receipt (subject to availability). Alternatively please contact the Institute in advance to reserve a place.
