Professor Cecil Helman: Rehumanising Medicine

23rd October 2008, 18:15 to 19:15, Room 231, Elvet Riverside

This is the first lecture in the Humanising Practice Seminar Series.

This seminar will draw on narrative reports from medicine’s ‘front line’, namely readings from Prof. Helman’s book ‘Suburban Shaman’ and his not yet published ‘An Amazing Murmur of the Heart’.

The central distinction to be drawn is that between curing and healing, in the context of modern medicine – the former carrying the ever-present risk of dehumanizing the patient (and possibly the doctor), the second seen as the way towards rehumanizing medicine.
