Invitation to all Durham Postgraduate Researchers
The Institute of Advanced Study’s Postgraduate Research Group warmly invite all postgraduate researchers to a welcome event.
Working within the IAS, the Postgraduate Research Group meets regularly (roughly once a month), to hear IAS fellows, papers from postgraduate researchers, and have general discussions. The group is an excellent opportunity to engage with the leading edge research of the IAS, and to network constructively with other postgraduates approaching similar ideas from different disciplinary angles. The group also receives invitations to private Fellows' seminars within the IAS, as well as advance notice of IAS lectures and future activities. Last year, the group established the interdisciplinary Kaleidoscope journal - due to be launched in November 2007 - and initiated planning for a future conference.
We are now looking for new members from the postgraduate research community (from all faculties) to join for the year 2007-8. The welcome event on 8th November will give you the flavour of the groups' activities and allow you to meet other postgraduate researcher s interested in the theme of "Modelling", interpreted in its broadest sense to be of interest to a wide range of disciplines.
The event will consist of:
- 7.00 Drinks reception
- 7.30 Brief introduction to the IAS and to the Group, and to the Kaleidoscope Journal
- 7.45 A paper by postgraduate Chris Lawless on 'Justice by Numbers?: Modelling Criminal Investigation' followed by discussion
- 8.30 Opportunity to chat informally with members of the group and editors of the Kaleidoscope Journal
If you would be interested in becoming a permanent member of the group, you can register your interest on the day; in order to gauge attendance numbers, if you will be attending please reply to email@example.com by Monday 5 November. If you will be unable to make the event but would still be interested in joining, please still email Alistair so that you can be added to the mailing list.
Because of the space available in the IAS building, group numbers are limited, and in the event of broad interest some form of selection of members may have to take place after the event. However, the Postgraduate Research Group will run more events over the year that will be accessible to the whole postgraduate community.
Contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more information about this event.
