20th November 2015, 10:00 to 16:00, Durham Cathedral, Prior’s Hall

‘Your Money or Your After-Life: Public Workshop’ features research on gift in the Christian tradition, with especial focus on the Middle Ages. The workshop will present a wide variety of themes and subjects. Come and find out about: Norwegian medieval Stave Churches and the extraordinary finds of coins and other objects from medieval Scandinavia; what the Middle Ages thought about Purgatory; what offerings meant in the context of illness and disease; how medieval churches were built and sustained. Shrines and offerings to the saints, as well as the theological debates about money and its use will also be explored. Comparative studies will feature a British premier of a film documenting contemporary a Tongan Methodist church ceremony of money-offering. The workshops draws on and will present the fruits of an international research project: ‘The Economy of Salvation in the Middle Ages’ funded by the Norwegian Research Council.

This is a free event: but you will need to get hold of a ticket. These will be available from the World Heritage Visitor Centre, Durham.
