In Praise of Forward Models: Reconstructing the Past Climate

27th May 2015, 13:00 to 14:00, Room CM221, Department of Mathematics, Lower Mountjoy, Professor John Haslett (Trinity College Dublin)

Joint research over the past decade with Brian Huntley has led to a new approach to the reconstruction of past climate. Participation in the IAS programme on Modelling in 2008, and lessons learnt from Michael Goldstein and Jonty Rougier, have all contributed to a deepening of my knowledge on modelling, and on stochastic modelling in particular. Forward stochastic modelling, and its probabilistic inversion, are at the heart of this new approach. In this seminar, I intend to challenge myself to present some of these ideas in simple and non-technical imagery, with illustrations from palaeoclimate reconstruction.

A buffet lunch will be available from 12:30 pm. Registration is only required for those delegates requiring lunch. Please contact Camila Caiado for more information.
