IAS Fellow's Seminar - Colours From Earth

9th December 2013, 13:00 to 14:00, IAS Seminar Room, Cosin's Hall, Palace Green, Dr Bob Fosbury (European Southern Agency)

Abstract: As an observational astronomer with a career spent peering into the distant reaches of the Universe, Dr Bob Fosbury performs an abrupt perspective shift to look back at our home planet in order to ponder what we might learn from its remarkable colour. Starting from our view of the "pale blue dot" in the frame of one of the "Portrait of the Planets" choreographed in 1990 by Carl Sagan as the Voyager 1 spececraft headed towards the boundary of the Solar System, Bob Fosbury will address the question of the origin of the colour blue and what it might tell us about the possibilities of inferring the presence of life on other 'earths', of which we now realise there must be billions in our Milky Way.
