Feet on Fire on Dere Street

21st June 2013, 18:00 to 22nd June 2013, 18:00, Binchester Roman Site and Bishop Auckland Town Centre

A celebration of the Binchester Roman site with something for all the family.

Give Calceamentis, the mythical shoe collector, one old shoe in exchange for entry to the site and help us bring this ancient place to life.



6.00pm: Join us at Binchester as the archaeologists hand over the site for 24 hours of revelry.

9.00pm: Torch lit Feet on Fire on Dere Street parade to Binchester Roman site.

Assemble in Bishop Auckland town centre (outside the Town Hall).

Bring an old shoe to gain entry to the Binchester site free of charge.

10.00pm: Fire sculptures and celebrations on site.

Midnight: Site closes to the public.


11.00am: Site re-opens to the public. The first 100 people to visit the site with an old shoe will be given one of the specially designed and made Binchester cakes.

5.00pm: ‘Hopes take flight’ the final fire sculpture takes people’s hopes to the world in a shower of sparks.


Come and visit us in Newgate Shopping Centre on 28th, 29th or 30th May (1pm-4pm) and tell us your hopes for journeys or adventures in the future. Maybe you could design the Binchester cake?

Think of a recipe for a bun or small cake that sums up Binchester and Bishop Auckland and send it to us at be made into 100 Binchester cakes for visitors to the site on 22 June.
