Calenders and Festivals: Identity, Culture, and Experience Public Lecture

6th February 2013, 18:15 to 19:15, ER 140, Elvet Riverside Building, Dr Gerhard Leinss (Cambridge)

Title - Calendar and Time in East Asia: The Chinese Calendar in Japan

This lecture will examine actual calendars that survived in Japan from all historical periods to answer two questions: How is time structured by this calendrical form labelled as "traditional" in modern East Asian societies? What do all the other elements seen in these calendars tell us about beliefs central to time in East Asia?
