Time as a Misty Window Seminar - Capture Recapture Methods and Party Activism in Post-War Britain

30th January 2013, 12:30 to 14:00, Seminar Room, Institute of Advanced Study, Dr Gidon Cohen (Durham University)

This seminar examines the possibility of using capture recapture methods on material derived from conventional historical sources. It does so by looking at debates about the trajectory of party activism in Britain using data drawn from Labour's largest constituency party.

The capture recapture analysis suggests that, the falling supply of individuals prepared to become politically involved is more important than the changing demand of parties for activists. The successful deployment of these techniques suggests that there are a range of methods, underutilized by historians, which are available to address otherwise intractable questions about the size and dynamics of historical populations.
