IAS Fellow's Public Lecture: Grappling with uncertainty: probing our glacial past and warm musings on science in society

14th March 2012, 17:30 to 18:55, The Ustinov Room, Van Mildert College, Professor Lev Tarasov (Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador)

All welcome to attend.

Embrace uncertainty! I submit this as an imperative for understanding and dealing with complex environmental systems such as the Earth's climate. But easier said than done. Through an ongoing glacial detective story, with torrents of water and ice, along with a climatic convulsion, I offer an example of the challenges and rewards of trying to meet uncertainty head-on. Interwoven in my twisted tale are some frolicking diversions on relations between science and society, and what all this has to do with taking care of the world around us.
