IAS Fellow's Public Lecture - The Science and Art of Fibres

12th February 2020, 17:30 to 18:30, Grey College, Dr Suzie Protiere (Institut Jean le Rond d’Alembert, Sorbonne University)

Abstract

Fibrous media are functional and versatile materials, as demonstrated by their ubiquity both in natural systems such as feathers or wood and in engineered systems from paper to textile products where they offer benefits in filtration, insulation or wetting. Understanding their properties thus has strong industrial and ecological consequences. In particular, the interaction of fibrous materials with liquids (through adsorption, wetting, drying, imbibition) is a very common yet complex phenomenon which has drastic impacts on the fibrous mediums mechanical behavior. In this talk, through simple experiments, Dr Suzie Protiere will discuss the physics of fibrous media in order to propose different uses of the material for artistic creation (architecture, sculpture) as well as new industrial possibilities for example.

This lecture is free and open to all.
