The Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) gathers information from all Higher Education (HE) providers (universities, colleges and specialist organisations) about many aspects of their operations. Providers have a statutory requirement to provide this data to HE funding councils and government bodies. HESA supports the providers in the collection, analysis and quality checking of the data.

HESA also delivers this data to a wide range of non-statutory organisations to promote public understanding of the HE sector. These include universities (for strategic planning), researchers (both academic and commercial), students/prospective students, press, media (primarily for compilation of league tables) and policy makers.

Our role

The Workforce Planning team coordinate the annual submission of staff data to HESA. We monitor the accuracy and completeness of people and appointments data throughout the year with a period of intense validation of the full annual dataset between August and October.
