Impact and Public Engagement

Our research has regional, national and international impacts. We work with partner institutions such as the Durham Book Festival, with medical practitioners through the Centre for Medical Humanities, and with many other public and private organisations. The department is committed to engaging public audiences through its programme of events.

Our researchers have curated numerous public exhibitions, on topics ranging from Time Travel to Mountaineering Literature
We organise many public events each year, from poetry readings to public lectures to dramatic performances
Through READ: Research English At Durham we make our research accessible to a global audience, while supporting regional literary organisations such as through our North East Book Events newsletter

We bring our teaching of literature to schools, prisons, and the wider community through a variety of outreach programmes.

We work in ongoing collaborations at a regional, national and international level.
