December 2016 Prospective Postgraduate Newsletter
What is life really like as a Durham English MA student?
Our prospectus and website will give you some idea of what to expect as an MA student, but there's no better way to get a feel for what's involved in postgraduate study than to hear from our students themselves.
Three of our current MA students are keeping a diary throughout 2015-2016, in which they give their impressions of Durham, our Department, and the challenges and rewards of studying at a higher level.
If you are a research student, you can also meet our current PhD researchers online.
Funding and Financial Support
Funding schemes for both MA and doctoral postgraduates are now open:
- Faculty of Arts and Humanities MA Bursaries (deadline 25th January 2016)
- Northern Bridge Doctoral Training Partnership PhD Studentships (deadline 18th December 2015)
- Durham Doctoral Studentships for international researchers (deadline 18th December 2015)
MA bursaries and Northern Bridge Studentships cover tuition fees at home/EU rate, while Durham Doctoral Studentships cover international fees. The two doctoral schemes include a maintenance allowance as well. For more information on each scheme, and other ways to cover the cost of your studies, see our Financial Support pages.
More than just a PhD
Congratulations to Thom Addinall-Biddulph, one of our recent PhD graduates.
In his time at Durham, Thom has done much more than write his thesis on the representation of American Presidents in fiction.
Among other things, he has organised our 2013 Late Summer Lectureseries, edited the magazine The Bubble, and served as postgraduate representative and Vice President of Durham's English Society. There are lots of opportunities like this available to you at Durham, through which our postgraduates expand their CVs and boost their careers.
We look forward to seeing you follow in Thom's footsteps!
