Yiji is a Fellow in the Durham Energy Institute and an Assistant Professor in Durham University’s Department of Engineering with a research focus on the technological development of Low-Carbon Energy Systems including the following topics: Renewable and Clean Energy Conversion, Energy Storage and Cleaner/Alternative Fuels to tackle the Climate Change challenges.

Yiji obtained MPhil in Sustainability (2012) and PhD in Energy Systems (2016) at Newcastle University, being awarded a prestigious Outstanding Research Award towards his PhD project. Dr Lu has published over 60 articles in high-quality international journals and peer-reviewed conferences, and one book chapter, with currently (July 2020) over 500 citations and an H-index of 13 according to Google Scholar.

Yiji is the Principal Investigator/awardee from Royal Academy of Engineering under the Transforming Systems through Partnerships Scheme, which aims to study clean energy technologies in transport sector. He is Co-I in Energy Systems Integration – Case Study on Integrated Zero-Carbon Hub funded by the National Centre for Energy System Integration (EPSRC).

Previously at Sir Joseph SWAN Centre for Energy Research, Yiji played as a key member and driving force of various projects including a Study of carbon-based Nanomaterial to enhance heat transfer and efficiency in Chemisorption Cogeneration system (EPSRC), Thermal Energy Management of Industrial Processes (EPSRC), 5th Generation Intelligent Hybrid District Heat Networks (EU-H2020), Development of a hybrid thermal-to-power energy system from Royal Society (Royal Society), Centre for Energy System Integration (EPSRC).

Yiji is a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College and servers as an Editorial Members in various Energy Theme Journals such as Energy Reports (Elsevier), Thermal Science and Engineering Progress (Elsevier), Scientific Reports (Nature Research), Frontiers in Energy Research (Frontiers) and Sustainability (MDPI). Recently, he has guest edited SI: Energy Storage for "Energy Reports", SI: Fuels of the Future for "Energies" and SI: Organic Rankine Cycle for "Frontiers in Energy Research".
