Research-led Investigation

Cryogenics - 1 L2 Astrolab - 1 Optical Rotation - 1
Cryogenics - 3

Overview:

The Research-led investigation is the last section of the Laboratory Skills and Electronics course, taking place in the Epiphany term after the electronics sessions.

You will complete an investigation in pairs that spans six experimental sessions. The experiments are on a wide range of topics, and you will be able to submit your preferences for topics.

Experiments:

The experiments are designed to enable you to develop the experiment in the way that most interests you! You will be expected to complete background reading for your topic and understand the functioning of new equipment.  Current students can find further information on Learn Ultra.

You will be assessed via both a continuous assessment component and a scientific report based on your findings.

Previous topics have included:

  • Astronomy
  • Fourier Optics
  • Low Temperature Conductivity
  • Optical Rotation
  • Solitary Waves
  • Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Metals
  • Viscosity
