Congratulations on receiving your offer to study at Durham University! It gives us great pleasure to welcome you to the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (usually known as MLAC) for our Post-offer Visit Day.
At MLAC you can study Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hispanic Studies, Italian, Japanese, and Russian. Some 80 full-time staff offer expertise in a wide range of subjects, including language, literature, cinema and visual culture, cultural history, philosophy, and translation. We also offer a degree in Visual Arts and Film; combining advanced academic study and practical skills development, this programme spans historical periods from classical Rome to the modern era, and is global in its geographical reach. Together we will enable you to develop your linguistic, analytical and communication skills.
With the opportunity to study material from the medieval period right up to the present day, you have the freedom to follow your interests and to develop your own voice.
In the Complete University Guide 2022, MLAC is ranked 3rd in Arabic (Middle Eastern & African Studies) and Chinese and Japanese Studies (in the East & South Asian Studies), 4th in Russian, 5th in Italian, German and Hispanic Studies and 6th in French. Our degree programmes offer you the opportunity to develop advanced languages skills and explore the depth of cultures in those languages.
