Dr Dario Lolli on the Jury of the Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival

Durham MLAC’s Dr Dario Lolli, currently in Japan with a Leverhulme International Fellowship, is serving on the Film Critics’ jury for this year’s Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival — a leading event bringing Japanese animation and culture to audiences across Wales.

The Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival, now in its fifteenth edition, is currently taking place across Cardiff, Colwyn Bay, and Aberystwyth, celebrating the very best of Japanese animation and culture.

Created and organised by animator Ms Eiko Meredith, Kotatsu has become a major platform for showcasing both classic and contemporary works of Japanese animation to audiences across Wales and beyond. The festival also features a Film Critics’ Award, judged by a panel of three critics — including Dr Dario Lolli from Durham University’s School of Modern Languages and Cultures (MLAC).

Dr Lolli is currently based in Japan as a Leverhulme International Fellow, working on his project Licensing Cultures Across the Japanese Creative Industries. His participation in Kotatsu connects his research directly with the film and animation communities, highlighting the impact of academic engagement within the creative sector.

The festival runs throughout October, and audiences are warmly encouraged to explore the full programme: https://kotatsufestival.com/programme/.

We’re delighted to see one of our colleagues contributing to such a vibrant celebration of Japanese culture and animation.
