Durham Law School undergraduate Sardar Muhammad Musa Khan has spearheaded an innovative voluntary initiative, creating a vital link for sixth-form students across South Asia aspiring to study law in the United Kingdom. The initiative demystifies the UK application process for over 450 students in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Originally from Pakistan and an alumnus of Lahore Grammar School, Islamabad, a leading school in the heart of Pakistan's capital city, Musa launched his project in February 2025 to demystify the UK law school application process. His initial outreach in Pakistan quickly gained momentum and expanded into a ‘cross-border’ campaign. Through a series of in-person and virtual presentations, Musa has liaised with over 450 students and various faculty administrators across the A Level and IB programmes in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

At the heart of the initiative is Musa’s presentation, “Your Gateway to Law School,” a guide he developed to equip aspiring law students with actionable advice on A-level subject selection, crafting compelling personal statements, preparing for the LNAT and navigating the broader university admissions process.

It is early days to assess the impact of the project’s influence, but the interest in Musa’s presentation shows a clear demand for the insights which it offers.

Reflecting on his work, Musa said:

My goal was to bring clarity and confidence to students in regions where access to reliable information about UK legal education has historically been limited. I am grateful to Professor in Practice Philip Bennett and Professor Pierre Schammo for enhancing my understanding of the various factors at play in international admissions and the wider opportunities Durham Law School has to offer, which I’ve been able to pay forward."

Musa’s grassroots effort, supporting the Law School’s commitment to diversifying its global student body, is a clear demonstration of the opportunities for students and student-led initiatives that Durham University has traditionally championed and are part of the “Durham Difference”.

The Dean of Durham Law School, Professor Volker Roeben, responding to Musa’s initiative said:

“I very much welcome Musa’s initiative in creating and executing this excellent project.  I would also like to congratulate him on his excellent results for his first year- placed, as at July 2025: second overall out of more than 380  first year Law undergraduates.

I am pleased to note that Durham Law School has excellent connections in the field of Law in Pakistan through collaborations between the Centre for Sustainable Development Law and Policy and the Federal Judicial Academy of Pakistan.

The Law School looks forward to welcoming more very able students like you from Pakistan (and, indeed, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka) to study Law at Durham both at undergraduate and post-graduate level.”
