What is a Local Chapter?

A Local Chapter provides a framework for DLS AA Members in a particular location to organise themselves for networking purposes and promote the DLS AA’s aims, as set out in Clause 2 or its Constitution amongst those members.

The Local Chapter Rules envisage substantial autonomy for Local Chapters within an appropriate framework to protect the reputation and liability of the Association, the Law School and the University.

Overview of how to establish a Local Chapter

The Local Chapter Rules provide for 2 or more DLS AA Members based in, or strongly connected with, a particular location to apply to the DLS AA Executive Committee to establish a Local Chapter of the DLS AA in that particular location.

If the DLS AA Executive Committee approves those DLS AA Members to be the establishing members of that Local Chapter, it will approve establishing a Local Chapter in that location.

Subject to following the appropriate formalities in the Local Chapter Rules, the DLS AA Executive Committee and those members can then work together to launch that Local Chapter.

Support for Local Chapters

The DLS AA Executive Committee envisages arranging suitable (non-financial) support for a Local Chapter both at time of launch and on an ongoing basis. The envisaged support includes:

  • providing a webpage for that Local Chapter to publicise its founding members and its organising committee, its forthcoming events and other news about that Local Chapter’s activities, and
  • to help publicise membership of the Local Chapter to current and potential members of the DLS AA based in the location of the Local Chapter and to help publicise the events arranged by the Local Chapter.

The Local Chapter is responsible for ensuring that any events it organises are self financing.
