DEI Seminar Series: ‘The Unmaking of an Off-Grid Solar Market’
This seminar will discuss the successes and difficulties encountered by the world’s largest off-grid solar market and the lessons that can be learnt for scaling up of renewable energy programs in developing countries.
Bangladesh's off-grid solar home systems (SHS) is the largest off-grid program in the world with nearly 4.2 million units installed. The SHS program was developed to raise social development and economic growth by increasing access to electricity in rural areas. The programme led by the Infrastructure Development Company Ltd. (IDCOL), intended to increase access to clean energy/electricity in rural areas through renewable energy and also improve technical and institutional efficiency in the power sector.
The IDCOL programme has been a ground breaking initiative to provide rural people access to electricity and subsequently unlocking other sustainable development benefits. However in the recent years the growth of the SHS market has slowed down drastically due to rapid expansion of the national grid, competing policy targets and also due to the rise of the low-cost generics in the private market.
Learnings from the programme can be very useful for scaling up of renewable energy programs in developing countries.
