How to choose mitigation measures for supply chain risks: an application in the offshore-wind industry
Decision frameworks for supply chain risk management benefit from a holistic approach for mitigating risks, which include
identification and assessment of risks and evaluation and selection of measures to mitigate risks.
We propose a two-stage decision framework that will assist managers to not only choose mitigation strategies for supply chain risks but also mitigation tactics when risks occur. Our decision framework employs a novel matrix-formulation for decision-tree analysis which integrates expert judgements. It improves and extends previous decision frameworks by 1) proposing a method for estimating probabilities from expert judgments; 2) considering the relationships among risks and mitigation measures; and 3) modelling the selection of mitigation measures leading to the lowest supply chain risk profile. We apply our framework to the offshore-wind supply chain, which faces high levels of exposure to risks because of its complexity. The results show how to choose mitigation strategies (governance structures in particular) and mitigation tactics for managing supply chain risks within the offshore-wind industry.
Dr Riccardo Mogre is a Lecturer in Operations Management at Durham University Business School. He received a BEng in Industrial Engineering and an MSc and a PhD, both in Operations and Supply Chain Management, from Politecnico di Milano, Italy. Before joining Durham University Business School, he was Lecturer at Hull University Business School and its Logistics Institute. Prior to that worked as a project manager for a market research and advisory company. He held visiting positions at the University of California, Los Angeles and at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Riccardo’s research has a quantitative and analytical focus. His research interests include information technology adoption and risk management in operations and supply chains. In particular, he is interested in analysing how information technologies, such as real-time tracking systems and decision support systems, mitigate operational risks. His research has been funded by the European FP7, the Technology Strategy Board and the White Rose Consortium. Riccardo is a member of INFORMS and its Manufacturing & Service Operations Management society.
