Introduction to Offshore Wind Energy Workshop

15th March 2017, 09:00 to 13:00, room E240, School of Engineering & Computing Sciences, DONG Energy

A special opportunity for Durham students to hear from DONG Energy's lead operator of offshore wind farms in the UK on topics ranging from turbine technology through political and regulatory issues to project lifetime and future challenges.

If you would like to attend the workshop please contact lynn.gibson@durham.ac.uk

Introduction to Offshore Wind Energy (09.00-11.30); covering:

  1. The Political and Regulatory context, “why offshore wind energy”
  2. Historical Background, brief tour through 25 years of evolution
  3. Introduction to the Main Technologies, the windturbines, the foundations and the electrical infrastructure
  4. Life-cycle of an offshore windfarm project, focusing on Project Development: gaining permits and achieving FID (investment decision)
  5. Future challenges

Offshore Windfarm Design Exercise (1.30-13.00)

DONG Energy will present some key design choices typically faced during Project Development; each small team will choose a site and design the windfarm (wind turbine, foundations, electrical design) and then determine the bid price for the power auction; we will then screen the projects for competitiveness and financial viability to see which projects get funded and built.
