Tutorial day on Methods for Energy System Planning under Uncertainty

14th December 2016, 09:30 to 17:00, International Centre for Mathematical Sciences in Edinburgh

The Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences, the UK Energy Research Centre, the Centre for Energy Systems Integration and Durham Energy Institute are organising a workshop on “Methods for energy system planning under uncertainty” on Wednesday 14 December at the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences in Edinburgh. The day will introduce attendees to key mathematical and statistical methods for managing uncertainty in models used to support capital planning and policy decisions.

The day will start at 1000 (tea/coffee from 0930) and finish at 1700. For directions to ICMS and accommodation options please see http://icms.org.uk/information.

There will be three technical sessions:

  • Statistical uncertainty quantification: Michael Goldstein (Durham University) and Amy Wilson (University of Edinburgh)
  • Efficient computational optimisation approaches: Ken McKinnon/Andreas Grothey (University of Edinburgh), additional speaker tbc
  • Decision support: Stan Zachary (Heriot-Watt University) on decision criteria, Kevin Wilson (Newcastle University) on expert elicitation

The day will finish with a networking poster session, giving an opportunity to develop new contacts and potential collaborations.

The main target audience is early career researchers in energy systems, and we hope it will also be of interest to more experienced researchers who wish to learn new techniques, analysts in industry and government who are interested in decision making under uncertainty, and researchers in other applied disciplines who wish to learn more about the technical methods presented.

There will be a registration fee of around £35 to cover the cost of lunch, and refreshments through the day. The registration page will be open by 9 November, and will be linked to from the homepage of Dr. Chris Dent (lead organiser) at http://www.maths.ed.ac.uk/school-of-mathematics/people?person=524 – once registration is open.
